"The few own the many because they possess the means of livelihood of all … The country is governed for the richest, for the corporations, the bankers, the land speculators, and for the exploiters of labor. The majority of mankind are working people. So long as their fair demands—the ownership and control of their livelihoods—are set at naught, we can have neither men’s rights nor women’s rights. The majority of mankind is ground down by industrial oppression in order that the small remnant may live in ease."

- Helen Keller, 1911

Why did we learn about Helen Keller’s childhood in school and not about the socialist and feminist advocacy that was her focus for the vast majority of her adult life? She was a suffragette and a disability rights activist! She helped to found the ACLU! She was a member of the Wobblies! She supported birth control and the rights of sex workers! In school her story always ended when she went off to college and “became a writer.” She was a badass political activist, not an inspirational disability trope, and if we learned about that we would think of her as more than just a joke in Apples to Apples.

  • girl: god mom you don't fucking understand me
  • god mom: i am omniscient

Do you ever look yourself straight in the eyes and think about how you can’t just develop a victim complex over and then slut shame any girl who doesn’t wanna bone you?

This post was asking about a potential link between the afro-style wigs and big, painted lips of the modern clown and racist caricatures, so I decided to do what any good theatre history student would do - I did some research.

SPOILER ALERT: YUP, IT’S RACIST AS FUCK

From Janet…

And in addition to that, let’s stop allowing it to be presumed that all male students and teachers are immediately going to over sexualize normal female body parts, and let’s stop allowing oppressive social power structures (schools) to define the terms of sexualization. And by no means am I disagreeing with the poster, we do live a thoroughly patriarchal society and sexual objectification of women is a massive problem in it. What I’m saying is that sexual objectification exists in it’s own way regardless of your gender, hell even if your gender/sexual identity is neither male nor female. But viewing sexual objectification as some sort of conflict between men and women is both wrong, and counter intuitive. Sexual objectification is a conflict between us, and those who would attempt to subvert normal psychological and biological processes (sexuality in general, not over-sexualizing women wearing shorts, just to clarify.) into a convenient and near omnipresent means of moral oppression that forces us to either conform to their preferred set of social behaviors or else be ostracized.
Just because you’re a woman wearing shorts doesn’t make you a slut or asking for it, and just because you’re a man near a woman wearing shorts doesn’t make you a pervert or a rapist. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. P.S: But if you are the kind of man who over-sexualizes women just because they wear shorts, then fuck you.

I really like pop punk because 50% of the time it’s just boys writing songs about girls who have “wronged” them and I like to perversely interpret these songs as celebrations of these women standing up for themselves and not settling for geeky whiners

David Foster Wallace was like, Art must be sincere! We must use every tool in the linguistic toolbox to cut through sentiment and dishonest cliche and build fresh ways to reveal the power and reality of unironized emotion.

And Mister Rogers was like, Basically the same thing, but without any shame or pretense or fear of sincerity.
